Good links or Quality links will probably have the biggest impact on you search engine optimisation (SEO)

We are not trying to give you the ‘definitive’ guide… rather the do’s and don’ts that make a difference to your rankings!

So what is a really effetive link building strategy?

10 Quality links = 200 links

Quality Links = ‘On theme’, dofollow, keyword in anchor text from a page with high pagerank.

So is it best to spend you time on finding 200 links or 10 links?

I bet you would rather only look for 10 links – you just need to understand how to find them and what they look like when you have found them!

What follows are explanations of what makes a quality link.  Spend 10 minutes understanding them… It could change your online life!!!

The following distinguishes between GOOD LINKS and NOT SO GOOD LINKS.  Notice it does not say GOOD LINKS and BAD LINKS?  That would suggest that if a link is not GOOD it is BAD, whch is obviously not the case.  Your objective is to find the best GOOD LINKS you can!

Assuming your website is a London restaurants… then a link on a food review website would be great.

Assuming your website is a London restaurants… then a link looking like go to Acme’s it is a great London Restaurant.

dollow enabled

You have a link on a friends website but he/she has the rel=”nofollow” tag on the link.
You have a link on a friends website and he/she does NOT have the rel=”nofollow” tag on the link.

It is possible to install something like SEO for Firefox  and click on the option to highlight ‘nofollow’ links that appear on a page.

Number of Links on the page

A page, that has a link to your website, also has links to 100 other websites.
A page that has less than 50 other links including a link to your website

Page Rank

A webpage that has a link to your website has a PageRank of between 3 and 10.
A webpage that has a link to your website has PageRank value of less than 1

PageRank goes from unranked, 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10.  The higher the PageRank value of the webpage that your link appears on the more valuable the link!  Install a Google Toolbar to show you the PageRank value of any webpage.

  1. * Link to the pages of your website not just the homepage
  2. * Pages that have less than 50 external links (firefox extensions like SEO Quake https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3036 can help here)
  3. * Put links on pages that have your keyword in their Page Title
  4. * Put links on pages that are on the same theme
  5. * Make sure your keyword is in the anchor text of the link
  6. * The sidebar of blog websites (this means your link appears on multiple pages)
  7. * Directories such as DMOZ and Yahoo!

Average

  1. * Get a link in a news site or online-magazine (‘ezine’) with thousands of visitors
  2. * A widget, badge or banner used by many sites and appearing on more than just the one page in a site
  3. * Buld an affiliate program into your business so that affiliates links are created to your websit

Poor

  1. * Multiple links from only a few websites
  2. * regularly linking between your own sites
  3. * Placing Comments on DoFollow blogs
  4. * Posting on forums and placing links in your signature box
  5. * Posting on web directories
  6. * Link exchanging with similar themed websites

Useless Strategies

  1. * Commenting / spamming on unrelated sites
  2. * Signing Guest books
  3. * Link exchanges on unrelated themed websites.
